AvenaWise is a Canadian co-borrower service that helps people access short-term loans of $250 to $1,500 by applying alongside them as a co-borrower. AvenaWise is not a lender and does not check credit scores. Applications are assessed on current employment income, and every loan term runs longer than 62 days, which is why AvenaWise is not a payday lender.
That is the short answer. If you want the longer one — what a co-borrower actually does, why the service exists, and what happens if you apply — keep reading.

What does "co-borrower" actually mean?
A co-borrower is someone who goes onto a loan application with you. The lender then assesses the two of you together instead of you alone.
Most people have met this idea in the form of a family member co-signing a car loan. The principle is the same. The difference is that AvenaWise does it as a service, so you do not have to ask a relative or a friend to put their name — and their credit file — on the line for you.
This is worth being precise about, because it is the single most misunderstood thing about the company:
- A lender gives you money and collects it back. AvenaWise does not do that.
- A broker or comparison site passes your details to a list of lenders and its job ends there. AvenaWise does not do that either.
- A co-borrower stays on the application with you. That is what AvenaWise is.
If you want the full breakdown, there is a longer piece on what a co-borrower service is and how it differs from a lender.
Why does a service like this exist?
Because a large number of working Canadians get declined for small loans for reasons that have nothing to do with whether they can repay them.
A thin credit file. A rough patch three years ago that is still sitting on the report. A newcomer who has been in the country for eighteen months and simply has not had time to build a history. In each of those cases the automated decision comes back the same way, and the person's actual, current ability to repay never gets looked at.
The co-borrower model is a way around that wall. Instead of asking a lender to overlook a credit file, it changes who is applying.
What AvenaWise is not
Four things get assumed about companies in this space, and none of them apply here.
It is not a payday lender. Payday loans are defined by their very short term. Every loan term AvenaWise works with runs longer than 62 days, which is why these are not classified as payday loans and no payday lending licence is required in any province.
It is not a credit repair company. AvenaWise does not fix, clean, or negotiate your credit report, and you should be sceptical of anyone who promises to.
It is not a bank. There is no account to open, no card, no branch.
It is not a way to solve a structural shortfall. If your monthly income does not cover your monthly costs, borrowing widens that gap rather than closing it. More on that below.
How the process works
Six steps, start to finish.
- Decide what you actually need. Borrow the expense, not the maximum.
- Apply. The form takes about two minutes and asks about your employment, your pay frequency, and your bank account.
- Verify your banking. This is a read-only connection. It confirms that the income you stated lands in your account and that the account is active and in your name. It cannot be used to move money.
- A person reviews the file. Not an algorithm returning a number in eight seconds. Reviews typically complete within a few hours during business hours; overnight and weekend applications are reviewed the next business day.
- Read the agreement, then sign it. You see the full contract — amount, schedule, terms — before any money moves.
- Funds arrive in the account you verified, and repayment is scheduled against your pay cycle.
Each of those steps is covered in more detail in How AvenaWise Works, Step by Step.
What gets looked at — and what does not
Looked at: your current employment income, how long you have been in the job, and what is already going out of your account each month.
Not looked at: your credit score. It is not pulled and it is not part of the decision. A 520 and a 720 look identical from here if the income and the job are steady. The reasoning behind that is in why we don't check your credit score.
Who this is for
A short-term loan is a tool for a specific job: a defined, one-off expense you can repay out of income you already have. A transmission. A dental emergency. A rent shortfall in a month where something genuinely unusual happened.
It is not the right tool if you are borrowing to cover borrowing. If that is where you are, call Credit Counselling Canada — or, in Quebec, your local ACEF. Both are free and confidential, and they will give you options that do not involve new debt.
Saying that costs us applications. We would still rather say it.
Frequently asked questions
What is AvenaWise?
AvenaWise is a Canadian co-borrower service. It helps people access short-term loans of $250 to $1,500 by going onto the application as a co-borrower, so the assessment is based on both parties rather than the applicant's credit file alone.
Is AvenaWise a lender?
No. AvenaWise does not lend money. It acts as a co-borrower on your application.
Is AvenaWise a payday lender?
No. Every loan term exceeds 62 days, so these do not meet the definition of a payday loan and no payday lending licence is required.
Does AvenaWise check your credit score?
No. Your credit file is not pulled and your score is not part of the approval decision.
How much can you borrow through AvenaWise?
Between $250 and $1,500.
Who is eligible?
You need to be 18 or older, currently employed, and hold an active Canadian bank account in your name. There is a fuller answer in Am I Eligible for a Short-Term Loan in Canada?
Is connecting your bank account safe?
The connection is read-only. It confirms your income and that the account is active. It cannot move money or change anything about your account. See the full explanation here.
How long does approval take?
Applications are typically reviewed within a few hours during business hours. Overnight and weekend applications are reviewed the next business day.
